Users will soon have a new feature that enables them to reduce the amount of AI-created media appearing in their feeds. This initiative comes as the company announced that it now features in excess of 1 thousand million content made with AI.

Trial and Implementation

The new functionality is being tested over the coming weeks before a widespread launch. This development coincides with a surge in AI content, fueled by emerging content generation software.

AI Content on Other Platforms

It has been noted that nearly 10% of the most rapidly expanding channels on another major platform only show content made by AI. A significant portion of this material is deemed low-quality AI content, a phrase for poor-quality, bulk-generated content that is typically illogical or dreamlike.

“We know from our community that a lot of users like content produced via AI tools, ranging from AI artwork to informative clips, and we want to give people the ability to increase or decrease of that, depending on their own preferences,” commented a spokesperson.

Volume and Proportions

The service announced that there are currently over a billion videos on its network identified as made with AI. Collectively, over 100 mn videos are added to the service every day, making AI content a limited portion of its total content library.

How to Adjust Settings

Users will be able to reduce or increase the amount of AI-generated videos they view by using the topic control feature in the app and selecting AI-made media. Additional categories that can already be adjusted under the filter cover news, style, cosmetics, and movement.

AI Disclosure Rules

TikTok’s policies require content makers to label lifelike AI-made content, and it prohibits harmful fake videos of public figures or emergencies. Any believable AI video that is not labeled can be removed under its user guidelines.

In addition, the platform will from now on add an artificially created label to content produced via its own AI tools, or identified by an collaborative effort for identifying content made by AI. This action is designed to stop users from trying to evade the labeling process.

Responsible AI Funding

The platform is additionally establishing a $2 million awareness program for experts and institutions to create learning resources about using AI responsibly. This project will benefit charitable organizations focused on training computer science.

Content Safety Approach

TikTok has supported its safety measures, amid discussion over proposals to lay off a large number of review team members in the United Kingdom. TikTok is expected to eliminate a significant number of roles in its trust and safety division in the UK capital, with trade unions and digital protection specialists raising concerns that people are being substituted by AI moderation.

A company official explained that human moderation would continue to be important, but automated tools can protect employees by removing the most distressing content prior to it is viewed by people. TikTok reported a significant reduction in shocking and graphic content seen by human moderators over the previous year due to intervention by its AI tools.

We believe it is crucial to combine staff and AI to maintain a secure environment,” she said. “We’ll have humans as integral to the approach, but we also think it’s very important to reduce exposure to unsafe media as quickly as possible, which is why a significant AI assistance is proving valuable process content quickly.”
