Larian Studios Unveil a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG to Date

The speculation around the recent awards show has been intense, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a strange statue. The secret is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.

A Different Direction

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words hints that the team is likely crafting a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it sparked the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, branching plots, and flexible progression—elements that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of specialized paths only possible if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can anticipate more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
